TURNING TRAUMA INTO BEAUTY

This art form is my meditation! When I injured myself years ago, I was in so much pain I couldn't work, let alone perform daily tasks! Even though the pain was constant, creating brought me so much mental peace and joy! Making beautiful pieces of art has taken over my life, and I want to share my gift with all of you!!

ARTIST BEHIND THE ART

ARTIST INFO

How's it going everyone!?

My name's Mason & I'm the owner / creative mastermind behind Mo Thredz! It's only me at the moment, but I'd love to connect & meet all you wonderful people! So if you want to, feel free to shoot me message!

Tie dye has quickly become my whole life! On my way to perfection I've constantly been inspired by all of the top tye dye artists of this time! As I develop my skils & test new waters I'm finally ready to show what I'm capable of & justify my years of perseverance with Tye Dye Drops!

INSPIRATION

As I've watched Austin Mack, Jake Roelofs, & Joshua Hudson to name a few! It has only reaffirmed that it's possible to create jaw dropping art with just string & dye! I've gotten to where I am by watching YouTube videos, Insta Live Feeds, trial & error, & a ton of practice! As far as I’ve come there’s still so much more to learn & experiment with! & That’s what truly keeps me coming back!

MY PROCESS

The entire process to make a top notch tye dye can be broken down into 4 steps & takes me generally 2-3 days!!

Step 1) Prewash

Step 2) Prep (3 part)

Step 3) Dye

Step 4) Washout

1) PREWASH

The start to any great tye dye is a prewash of the fabric. Using Synthrapol (a commercial grade detergent), I cook every shirt in a pot to strip the fabric of any gunk or impurities, preparing it for dying! After doing that I send them through the washer & dryer for a cycle, take em out, fold em all up, & organize em! The prewash is done! Now onto the most important part, preparing the dyes & shirts!

2) PREP CHEM WATER

There’s so many benefits to preparing chemical water to mix with dyes, I know it definitely saves me time & stress! Try out this basic chem water recipe to see results then tweak it from there:

- 8 cup Distilled Water

- ½ cup Urea

- ½ tsp Calsolene Oil

- ½ tsp Sodium Alginate

*Mix ½ the water with Urea & the other ½ with Sodium Alginate then combine*

Depending on whether the shirt is wet or dry, tyed tight or loose, different solutions are needed! Once the mix comes to room temperature, it’s ready to start mixing with dyes!

2) PREP DYEZ

If you're as infatuated with color as I am, look no further! Dharma Trading Co. makes some fantastic fiber reactive dyes that I stand by & strictly use! These professional grade dyes result in bright, crisp, & clean colors for years to come! Once the dyes are mixed & heated it’s onto folding the shirts!

2) PREP SHIRTS

Time for some real fun, the tedious folding! Simply soaking a shirt in 1 gal. water w/ 1 cup of soda ash will help the fabric to absorb the dye & the final result be brighter! A dry shirt is way more challenging to tye & dye than a wet one! So once I’ve spun out all the shirts in the washing machine it’s time to center them & begin drawing on designs! From spinning out the shirt, to folding & tying, this step can take me anywhere from 45 mins up to 11 hrs (personal record) depending on the complexity! Prep is finally all done! Now it’s time to dye!

3) DYEING

It’s finally time to let that creativity run free! For most people it’s hard to know when your shirt is saturated enough! That’s why I like to follow the pattern, going back & forth over & over again! I also like to peek inside the pleats to see if any more dye is needed!

After I’m done dying, the next step is to cure the colors onto the fabric! I’ll spray the shirt with a soda ash mix as another chance for the dyes to bond! The curing process in all takes around 24 hrs! Through the help of heat & soda ash the dye is driven to bond to the fibers of the shirt! After what seems an eternity (24 hrs) it's finally cured & needs to be rinsed out! Time to see your masterpiece!!

4) WASHOUT

This step is the most important to me because a lot can go wrong with your colors in a short time! Before I even start rinsing out any shirts! I have to set up my washing station & heat up another fresh pot of Synthrapol! Once I have that going, I begin rinsing out my shirts w/ COLD WATER till it runs clear. Cold water stops any colors from “backwashing” onto each other, which saves my sanity!

After I've opened it & taken a gander, I'm gonna rinse it again to release the rest of the unbonded dye! Finally when the shirt runs clear, it's time to cook it! I cook every shirt twice to really strip the unbonded dye off the fabric! I mix up a whole new pot for the second batch! After everythings cooked, it's off to the washer & dryer for a cycle!

To finish, I'll take the fresh shirt, iron it out, package it up, & send it on its way! That’s it! That’s what I do all day & night 25/8!

If you’ve gotten all the way down here & read my whole process, I deeply appreciate your interest in my craft & how it happens! In return for that, I’d love to offer you some % off on any one of my custom shirt drop pieces!

Every other Friday I’ll be doing tye dye drops, which will consist of 2/3 top notch dyes! To get 10% off, just screenshot this & send it to me on Insta! I will then give you a code to use on my site! (1/12/23)
